April saw the recording of several new classical works by PARMA artists, a symphony’s world premiere in an intense winter storm, and more. Read on to follow the PARMA production team through sessions around the world.

A World Premiere With Boulder Symphony

Typically it’s the orchestra’s job to bring the house down, but a menacing winter storm stepped in on the cold night in Colorado where Peter Drew’s Symphony No. 1, Reminiscence was receiving its world premiere. Thankfully, another venue was available after the roof of the original hall was ripped open by fierce winds, and video of both March 29 and 30’s concerts were captured — safely.

Audiences and performance personnel proved resilient amidst the storm, selling out both concerts and giving a memorable showcase of Drew’s symphonic work. A full live video of the performance will soon be available to the public.

In this interview with Boulder Symphony conductor Devin Patrick Hughes, Drew shares his eclectic musical influences, ranging from classical masters like Beethoven and Bach to jazz, film scores, and world music, all of which are interwoven into his Symphony No. 1.

Virtual Piano Performances

The production team has filmed several virtual concerts with PARMA artists at the recently-reopened Studio Martínek in Prague. Currently in post-production, these video performances feature the music of composers John Craven, Mark Zanter, Jacob Goodman, and Karen Tarlow will be released on Youtube later this year.

Several of these works’ studio recordings have been released on Navona Records.

Kuhn Choir and String Orchestra

Shortly after, The Kühn Choir of Prague returned to Studio Martínek, this time with a string orchestra, to record new music selected from PARMA’s recent Featured Recording Opportunity for choral works.

The choir recorded two works by composer Christopher J. Hoh, O Sacrum Convivium and Sanctus & Benedictus, which was recorded alongside string players from the Czech Studio Orchestra under the baton of Kühn Choir’s Choirmaster Jakub Pikla.

Our Featured Recording Opportunity with the Kühn Choir invites composers to record their classical choral music at Studio Martínek.
