October sessions began at Rockport MA’s Shalin Liu Performance Center with composer Deborah Kavasch, who brought a composition with great sentimental significance to record with Juventas New Music Ensemble.
Journeys for soprano, horn, and piano was selected from submissions to a recent Featured Recording Opportunity for chamber music, and will be programmed in a live concert this coming spring.
The piece was written by her late husband John Marvin, a fellow musician and composer who passed in 2018.
“All three movements sound fantastic,” said Kavasch. “John would be so proud and pleased if he were here. Many thanks to Brad Michel, Lucas Paquette, and these amazing performers!”
David Wilborn and Sirius Quartet
Sessions continued in Mount Vernon NY at Oktaven Audio, where Sirius Quartet gathered to record composer David F. Wilborn’s Giddings Remembered.
As his first work for string quartet, Giddings Remembered revives a melody grew up hearing during church services.
“When I was a kid, my sister and I would visit my grandmother in Giddings TX over the summer,” says Wilborn. “Many times our visit would coincide with a religious revival that would take place. During the revival, there was a particular song that we would sing… When singing the song, everyone in the church would grab their neighbor’s hand and sing while moving their arms rhythmically up and down to the music. I remember people singing the words with such power and conviction, and the arm movement matched the intensity of the singing. I have always wanted to try and use this melody as the focus of a new composition.”
Kristina Marinova and The Grateful Dead
October productions concluded with pianist Kristina Marinova gave a soul-stirring performance of Grateful Dead music for solo piano at Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth NH. Hear the album version of her program with THE BUS CAME BY AND I GOT ON from Navona Records.
