IN MEDIAS RES

Josh Getman

Roughly translated from Latin, In medias res becomes in the midst of things. That, however, is not why I chose to title my quintet as such. In medias res is a literary technique often used at the beginning of epics; the narrative begins late, often at a crucial moment in the story’s structure. What follows the opening is a flashback of the events leading up to this crucial moment. Often, upon returning to the important moment that started the narrative, the story begins to head towards its conclusion. When composing In Medias Res I did not want to literally depict a non-musical narrative that used this device, but rather explore ways to create a purely musical narrative that contained the basic structural principal of In medias res: a narrative, late in its trajectory, logically returns to its opening that was once distinct and isolated from what followed it. However, with the return of the opening, it is no longer in isolation and leads to the conclusion of the narrative.
