ELEGY
Liza White
Elegy was commissioned by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet for a recital at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, on March 8th, 2009. The recital was given in conjunction with a museum exhibit of American drawings and prints from the Great Depression and World War II eras entitled The American Scene on Paper. Elegy was written with this exhibit in mind.
Elegy's musical style could be described as a type of diatonic American impressionism. The work's melodic lines are collage-like, made up of notes contributed by several different voices emerging from the overall texture. I was trying to piece together the music the way a collection of art works depicting isolated scenes can piece together the general feeling of a historical era. Like that of the Depression and World War II scenes in the exhibit, the mood created by Elegy is subdued but hopeful.
