A grand, expansive meditation on the unseen forces that shape human resolve, Lawrence Mumford’s Symphony No. 4: For the Soul translates the internal struggles of duty, sacrifice, and hope into a richly tonal and classically inspired idiom. Recently recorded by the Czech Republic’s Janacek Philharmonic, the symphony or its individual movements have been streamed over 6,000 times, broadcast on radio over 400 times, included on several Spotify playlists as well as the “Ultimate Playlist” of the nation’s largest classical radio station conglomerate (Classical California), and reached either the winners’ circle or finalist designation for The American Prize. New York Music Daily described the music as “…very cinematic and translucent… there’s a Gershwinesque sense of contentment mixed with moments of bittersweetness, and a towering, Vaughan Williams-like pastoral solidity.”

Movements
Symphony No. 4: For the Soul seeks to portray the unseen. Although the five movements form a whole, any one can be performed as an independent concert piece. Each has a different personality, and they have often been broadcast by themselves. The Prelude “The Race Before Us” is driving and could serve as a concert opener. Of Times and Seasons is an adagio, with a steady build to a great climax. Hope and a Future could either open or close a concert, with a rhythmic spirit of optimism. Sacrifice is a mid-tempo tribute in minor to the heroes among us, from first-line responders to medical personnel in the recent pandemic to those who paid the ultimate price in previous wars. Range of Light uses broad-breathed melody lines to remind us of the beauty of nature and the power of the Creator.
