Houston’s Axiom Quartet is set to embark upon a 12-date tour of China in support of its debut album, AXIOMS: MOMENTS OF TRUTH (Navona Records). The tour kicks off on July 20th in Shijiazhuang and will present the first international performances by the ensemble.

“Our mission is to blend musical styles and break down genre barriers in order to introduce new music to new listeners,” says Axiom cellist Patrick Moore. “Touring China offers an incredible opportunity to reach a vast audience hungry for fresh experiences, music, and culture. It’s what we want as well.”

Axiom’s musical approach is an inventive one. The ensemble’s new album, which dropped in April and has been praised as “a fascinating program” (The Whole Note) and “thoroughly modern… like musical Rice Krispies as they bring so much snap, crackle and pop to the fore” (Midwest Record), features music as disparate as Monteverdi, Elliott Smith, Charles Ives, and Billie Holiday in a carefully constructed sequence woven together by Axiom’s de facto fifth member, composer and arranger Karl Blench.

The group’s China tour is part of an initiative by PARMA Recordings, the parent company of Navona Records and other labels, to bring American music to Chinese audiences.

“With a potential audience exceeding a billion people, a strong desire to experience Western musical culture, and spectacular concert halls dotting the country, China is a prime destination for us and our ensembles,” says PARMA Recordings CEO Bob Lord. “We have a dozen ensembles touring China in 2018/2019, and we expect to increase our footprint there as we have in the United States, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cuba, and more. We’re proud to have Axiom Quartet represent us on this tour.”
